PRESS-FIT TECHNOLOGY

PRESS-FIT
TECHNOLOGY

Our press-fit connectors and pins help eliminate costly soldering operations and the damaging effects of direct press-fit components, offering robust solutions such as compliant pin connectors and press-fit contacts that deliver dependable performance.

Press-fit connector and pin products

As the industry pioneer, Autosplice offers Press-Fit solutions that provide our customers with solderless, internally powerful, gas-tight connections. Press-Fit (Compliant) Technology is available in a large variety of sizes, types, and features, and is compatible with high-speed automation with each part number engineered for traceability and efficient shipping logistics worldwide.

Press-fit connection relies on normal force, just like a contact system, unlike a soldered connection, which relies on cohesive and adhesive strength of the solder joint. Press-fit terminals are assembled onto the PCB via high-speed insertion machines.

The “eye-of-the-needle” approach has been proven to provide the most reliable technology for optimizing both initial and ongoing retention force. The spring-like design used in eye-of-the-needle configurations provides intimate, long-term contact force against the barrel of the hole with precise compatibility for a plated-through-hole diameter of 0.60±0.05mm.

All of Autosplice’s compliant pins, blades, and sockets are provided in continuously reeled formats as either individual or multiple-position connector components for insertion by high-speed automatic machines.

INTRODUCING

0.4 mm PRESS-FIT
TERMINAL

The all-new 0.4mm EON press-fit zone is designed to work with the new industry-standard plated-through-hole size of 0.60±0.05mm. The press-fit zone achieves optimum retention strength at each end of the PTH size range by employing a combination of elastic and plastic deformation.

Autosplice has elected to standardize the press-fit material to the high-performance CuNiSi alloy, with optional CuSn4 and CuSn6 if required. The terminal is offered in standard and reduced tin plating. The latter is especially relevant in high-density terminal applications to reduce the likelihood of tin whiskering.

NEW PTH SIZE
OF 0.60±0.05 mm

The all-new 0.4 mm EON press-fit zone is designed to work with the now industry-standard plated-through-hole size of 0.60±0.05mm, a critical hole diameter specification that enhances compatibility and insertion reliability

STANDARD
MATERIAL

Autosplice has elected to standardize the press-fit material to the high-performance CuNiSi (C19010), but will offer CuSn4 and CuSn6 if required.

EXCEEDS
REQUIREMENTS

The 0.4 mm design was then refined by laboratory testing to achieve the current design, which exceeds all published automotive Tier 1 requirements and has proven resilient against thermal stress in harsh environments.

TOOLING &
ASSEMBLY

Assembly of the 0.4 mm press-fit terminals to PCBs can be efficiently accomplished with an Autosplice insertion machine and a custom-designed insertion head — an ideal setup for integrating compliant pin connectors into automated production lines.

WHY PRESS-FIT?

PRESS-FIT VERSATILITY

  • Hundreds of tooled components in both soldered and compliant press-fit terminals
  • Allows replacement of terminal in PCB
  • Modularized tooling provides low-cost product extensions
  • Scalable insertion systems deliver cost-efficient assembly solutions
  • Global design, manufacturing and sales locations

PRESS-FIT VALUE

  • Fast production process
  • Compliant press-fit connection is less dependent on manufacturing processes for reliability than soldered connection
  • Provides a simple lead-free solution

PRESS-FIT RELIABILITY

  • High normal force along with high retention force ensures reliable connection in automotive environments
  • Eliminates wave soldering and screen paste solder
  • Low contact resistance and reliable interface
  • Improves product reliability and eliminates cold solder joints and flux contamination
